The movie tried to explain and smooth some things and I have to say that some of the things it did, I was thinking too, but it was also. Another day comes when foster parents are to arrive and choose kids to take home with them and Earwig expects the usual thing to happen, a bunch of cooing over babies and toddlers and the ignoring of the older kids. Guardian A magical story for young readers from the author of Howl’s Moving Castle and Charmed Life, Diana Wynne Jones. The book is full of wonderful, quirky line illustrations - there are crow headers on each page, as well as spiders and crows appearing at the bottom of pages throughout but then there are also fabulous pictures of the characters showing Earwig with her googly eyes and crooked teeth, Bella Yaga looking rather hideous and the Mandrake with his horns and scary eyes!

This version includes some scenes not shown on the TV broadcast version [22] [23] (but already included in releases of the film outside Japan).

The story is divided into chapters, but at less than 150 pages isn't so long that younger readers would find it too difficult. Earwig has been at the orphanage for her entire life and she is perfectly content staying there forever. With the help of the talking cat, Earwig puts a spell on herself so the witch can never do anything to her, including give her worms. With the help of Thomas, the witch's cat, who has also been mistreated, she will roll up her sleeves and try to turn the situation around in her favour!When she finds herself in a house of dark magic, she does whatever she can to adapt—especially if it means that she'll learn a little magic herself!

Like the TARDIS in Doctor Who, rooms can be bigger on the inside, and don't follow the laws of physics. In the ensuing chaos, Earwig breaks into Mandrake's room and discovers he and Bella Yaga were members of the band Earwig. With his help, she might be able to master enough magic to make Bella Yaga regret ever treating her like a slave.In the film there was a scene where the band is playing the song, Mandrake playing keyboard, Red headed witch singing and playing guitar and Bella playing drums but there is also an unnamed brown haired male bassist, just wondering if he is also in the book. The humour is light, and the ending felt a little unresolved, but I still enjoyed this story, and really liked the illustrations, which were quirky and a little spidery.
